the wedding rut

I’m an obsessive compulsive type. I often think that nobody knows how to stack the dishes just “right.” I take great pride in arranging the condiments in my fridge door in a way that makes perfect sense to me. I think of a wedding as an elaborate play that requires a skilled stage manager to ensure a successful show.

Lately, I’ve been neglecting the dishes, the condiments are lined up all willy nilly in the door, and I am focused — monomaniacally — on one thing. The show must go on.

I am the stage manager, the skillful coordinator, whatever title fits the bill for obsessing about my wedding and all the plans that go into making it a kick ass party for family and friends. This week’s obsession is finalizing the save-the-date cards and attempting to narrow down the many DIY decoration and favor ideas I like most (thanks to thebitchybride for a great how-to post that will save me lots of money on my flower budget).

I called my mom yesterday, and she told me she picked up a Martha Stewart wedding magazine to help me find ideas for DIY wedding decor and favors. Thanks, mom. You don’t have to encourage my obsessiveness, really. I’ve already been scouring Offbeat Bride and The Knot on a daily basis. What I need now are minions to help me make all this stuff, minions who have storage space to spare. Because I don’t have enough space to fit all of those nifty paper flowers.

  1. I know you say you’re scowering The Knot, but my best advice with that site is that the biggest wealth of knowledge on there comes from the forums! They are glitchy (more often than not) but the information on there is INCREDIBLE!

Thanks for the advice, but don’t encourage me. I’m DIY crazed enough already. But now that you’ve mentioned it, I’ll probably have to check it out.

      • I hear ya, decided to count my DIY list and I have 54 projects to finish in the next 6 months… I am definitely on the DIY crazy list, maybe the men in white coats will come take us away to a shared padded room lol

Okay, now I don’t feel so bad about my DIY obsessiveness.

Stick with it. Others may think we’re loons, but I think it’s worth it to both save lots of money and have a personalized touch.

      • Most definitely! I love the fact that everything’s going to be so personal… and I keep reminding myslf I only plan on ever doing this once 😉 hahaha

Thanks, Laura. It’s the paper flowers that I think I’ll be needing help with so far. I’m sure I’ll find more DIY decorating projects once my mom brings me Martha’s magazine. It’s a good thing, right?

  3. Buy a decent fruitcake and your day will be complete!

Glad I could help. I have a problem with storage space too – my garage is already stuffed paper flowers and vintage crockery and I’ve got six more months of making and scavenging 😦
